If you’re a runner or triathlete, you probably worry about hydration and energy. Maybe you’ve tried sports drinks and energy gels. Most people I speak to don’t really like them but aren’t sure what to use instead. So I thought I’d share my take on energy gel and an electrolyte drink. Simple, homemade recipes that taste great and are packed with nutrients.
Lemon and lime energy gel
Ingredients (makes 3/4 cup)
4 dates (soaked in hot water for at least an hour)
1/2 cup raw agave nectar
1 tbsp lime zest
2 tsp lemon zest
Sea salt to taste
Combine all the ingredients in a blender or small food processor until smooth. Divide into small feed bags and seal with a tie. Store in the fridge for up to 3 weeks. Just bite off a corner when you’re ready to eat it.
Fruity electrolyte energy drink
500ml cold water
3 tbsp maple syrup
1 tsp coarse sea salt
lemon juice, to taste
lime juice, to taste
Combine the ingredients, mixing thoroughly. Keep refridgerated until you use it.
